
SULTAN: Hey Ali! What’s the problem with you? You always reach office late.
ALI: I am really in trouble. I can’t sleep at night.
SULTAN: I have heard you may be fired. You are not doing your work efficiently.
ALI: During the office period I feel sleepy, thus can’t do my work properly. I am helpless.
SULTAN: If you are able to get good sleep at night your problem will be solved.

But what happens if you just cannot sleep?
Most people need to sleep for seven or eight hours each night.
When people are very tired it can be hard for them to do their work well. And it can be hard to remain happy.
But the sleep problem should go away, life begins to return to normal and everyone feels better.
Some people go to bed early. They lie down and close their eyes. But sleep will not come. Or other people go to sleep easily. But then they awake many times in the night. Or they awake very early in the morning. And they cannot sleep any more. These situations are worrying if they go on night after night.
The more people worry, the less they sleep. And so the problem gets worse and worse.
Scientists do not fully understand the purpose of sleep. But the effects of a lack of sleep give them a better understanding. They believe that the main purpose of sleep is to rest and repair the body.
Scientists say that there are five levels of sleep. And these levels have different purposes. The deepest sleep is level five.
So what causes a lack of sleep?
There are many reasons why people find it difficult to sleep. Eating a large meal late at night can keep people awake. But not having enough food can also prevent sleep. Some people say that hot drinks help them. They have a warm sweet drink of milk before they go to bed. Milk and sugar both help the brain to make the chemical serotonin.
Serotonin encourages sleep. Eating particular foods can have the same effect. Foods like, rice, pasta or potato.
Some people have to try to sleep in a noisy environment. Wearing earplugs can help. People put them into their ears to block out noise.
Students often find it difficult to sleep when they are studying hard. It can be the same for people starting a new job - or for people who have an especially difficult job.
Sometimes it does not seem possible to stop thinking about this worry or that concern.
Doctors sometimes give drugs to help these kind of sufferers.
But they are not usually a permanent answer. If possible, it is best to discover the cause of the problem and to solve it.
Here are some suggestions that can help people to sleep.
Do something quiet and restful before going to bed.
Try not to do anything at the end of the day that involves a lot of thinking.
And try not to argue with anyone!
Try and be as calm as possible before lying down to sleep. When you lie down, let every part of your body rest completely on the bed.
But what happens if we try all these ideas and they do not work? Sometimes it is just too difficult to forget our worries and go to sleep. Sometimes we wish that there were someone who would share our problems. We wish that they would lift the heavy loads from our minds.
